Carpal tunnel

Specialist assessment and surgical treatment for carpal tunnel, with dedicated care for hand health

Surgical carpal tunnel decompression

At Policologna, the process begins with a specialist assessment. The doctor reviews your symptoms and examines your hand and wrist. If needed, further tests may be recommended to clarify the diagnosis.

What is carpal tunnel syndrome?

It is caused by compression of the median nerve as it passes through the wrist. It may cause tingling or numbness, especially in the thumb, index and middle fingers and part of the ring finger, as well as pain and, in some cases, reduced hand strength.

When surgery is indicated, carpal tunnel decompression involves cutting the ligament that forms the roof of the carpal tunnel to reduce pressure on the nerve.

Not all tingling or hand pain is caused by carpal tunnel syndrome. A consultation helps identify the cause and assess the most appropriate treatment.

Who may be assessed for this procedure?

An assessment may be appropriate for persistent tingling, numbness or pain, especially if it affects the fingers supplied by the median nerve or interferes with daily activities. The consultation helps clarify the cause of the symptoms and determine whether surgery is appropriate.

What benefits may it offer?

  • Reduced pressure on the median nerve when surgery is indicated.

  • Possible relief from tingling, numbness and pain.

  • Technique and anesthesia selected for the individual case.

After surgery, pain or sensitivity around the incision, swelling, stiffness or temporary weakness of the grip may occur. Some symptoms may persist, and recovery times vary from person to person. During the assessment, the doctor will explain the expected benefits, limitations and possible risks.

What does the process involve?

  • Assessment: The doctor examines the hand and wrist and recommends further tests if needed.

  • Surgery: If indicated, the technique and anesthesia are determined for the individual case.

  • After surgery: You will receive instructions for caring for the wound and hand, along with guidance on follow-up visits.
