What is it?
Endometriosis is a condition in which tissue similar to the lining of the uterus grows in other areas of the body, such as the ovaries, fallopian tubes and pelvis. This tissue continues to respond to menstrual cycle hormones, causing inflammation and adhesions between tissues. There is no single known cause, but several theories may explain why it develops.
How does it present?
Symptoms of endometriosis can vary, but the most common include:
-
Severe pelvic pain, often related to the menstrual cycle
-
Pain during sexual intercourse
-
Pain when urinating or having a bowel movement
-
Heavy or irregular periods
-
Fertility problems
Other symptoms may include fatigue, abdominal bloating or nausea. The severity of symptoms does not always reflect how extensive the disease is.
Care and treatments
There is no definitive cure for endometriosis, but effective approaches are available to manage symptoms and improve quality of life. Treatment options include:
-
Medicines, such as painkillers and hormone therapy, to reduce tissue growth
-
Surgery (laparoscopy) to remove endometriosis tissue and adhesions
-
Multidisciplinary support, including pelvic floor physiotherapy, nutrition and pain management
The choice of treatment depends on each woman's symptoms, age and reproductive goals.
